Tasting Notes
The 2018 Rose opens with summery aromas of jasmine, peach and fresh-cut grapefruit. A mouthwatering texture delivers light yet lively flavors of stone fruit, pear, raspberry and watermelon. The finish is delightfully dry, crisp and quenching with lingering hints of lime zest.
Vineyard Notes
The fruit for this wine comes from Block 34, which occupies one of the coolest spots in the entire Paso Robles region. Here, a notch in the coastal peaks invites an ingress of brisk marine air from the nearby Pacific Ocean, fostering conditions that are favorable to Pinot Noir. Margarita Vineyard stands alone as the southernmost vineyard in the Paso Robles region, nestled into the rugged Santa Lucia Mountain range just 14 miles from the ocean in the new Santa Margarita Ranch AVA. The natural marine cooling results in an extended growing season that yields fruit with uncommon depth and structure. The peaks are also testaments to the tectonic forces that created Margarita Vineyard’s rare diversity of soils, ultimately fostering natural complexity in our wines.
Production Notes
This wine comes from a specific portion of Block 34—a low saddle with short vine rows where the cooling airflow is most pronounced. Here, we picked eight tons of Pinot Noir fruit at early ripeness on August 10 to establish bright vibrancy in the wine. The fruit was wholly dedicated for rosé production to ensure a pure, refreshing style. After whole-cluster pressing, the juice was cold fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve its delicate aromatics and crisp texture. After fermenting to full dryness, the wine was cold-aged in stainless steel for eight months prior to bottling. The result is a rosé that is clean, elegant and perfectly suited for summertime sipping.
