The 2018 Cabernet Franc is a limited release that comes from the Oyster Ridge section of our estate Margarita Vineyard, where profound calcareous soils and a northeasterly exposure combine to yield a Cabernet Franc with a vivid sense of place. This wine belongs to our Pearl Collection, which signifies small lots of the highest quality expressed through alternative varietals and unconventional blends.

Tasting Notes
The 2017 Cabernet Franc offers lifted aromas of cherry, plum and baking spice with notes of tobacco and smoked meat. A smooth, high-toned palate delivers integrated flavors of black cherry, black currant, boysenberry, vanilla cream, cola and coffee. Silky tannins are layered into a polished finish. This is a beautifully composed and integrated wine that showcases Cabernet Franc at its finest.
Vineyard Notes
This limited-edition Cabernet Franc comes from Block 9 at Margarita Vineyard, which slopes toward a northeastern exposure. This exposure shields the vines from the late afternoon sunlight, resulting in a long, steady growing season that produces Cabernet Franc fruit with beautiful ripeness and proportion. Additionally, the calcareous sea bed soils in this block contribute a distinctly elegant texture to the fruit. Margarita Vineyard stands alone as the southernmost vineyard in the Paso Robles region, nestled into the rugged Santa Lucia Mountain range just 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean in the Santa Margarita Ranch AVA. The mountain peaks act as a gateway for cool marine air, resulting in an extended growing season that yields fruit with uncommon depth and structure. The peaks are also testaments to the tectonic forces that created Margarita Vineyard’s rare diversity of soils, ultimately fostering natural complexity in our wines.
Production Notes
With the exception of a brief September heat wave, the 2017 growing season was smooth and steady, producing Cabernet Franc fruit with full flavors and fine structure. After the fruit was harvested on November 9, it was destemmed and cold soaked prior to fermentation for a gentle extraction of color and flavor. At the conclusion of fermentation, the wine was racked to neutral French oak barrels, where it matured for nearly two years prior to bottling. Winemaker Stewart Cameron prefers neutral oak for Cabernet Franc because it allows varietal purity to shine through the wine.
